review 1: For years now I've been meaning to pick up the stories for side characters in the BPRD and Hellboy universe and it is great to finally purchase and read the Lobster Johnson volumes. He is a delightfully simple character who has one goal: to make evil doers feel the claw of justice! Fortunately, Lobster isn't alone and his role as a leader a crew of do-gooders was a nice surprise. As was the cameo of a BPRD villain in this volume. The tone is very pulpy which fits the WWII-era story and is a fun action/adventure story. The plot is simple but the action is exciting and over the top. The art is good, but not spectacular in this volume. The artist tries to imitate Mignola's style and does a decent job of it, but Mignola cannot easily be replicated. While the story does... moren't really matter in the grand scheme of Hellboy/BPRD, it is a fun ride that is worth taking for fans of Lobster Johnson.
review 2: During his usually unexpected appearances in Hellboy and B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, being a stereotype of all things pulp and Golden Age, has endlessly amused me. He's so perfectly over the top, that he's impossibly likable, but so bizarre he's impossible to take seriously. That feeling, distilled, is this first installment in his solo adventures. It's terrifically tongue-in-cheek and charming in its own wonderful way. It's not terribly groundbreaking or thought provoking but it is a one way ticket to instant nostalgia for a simpler era in comic books, more cut and dried characters and motives. It is obviously a pet project for Mignola, and it's great to be invited along for a ride that is so obviously borne out of deepest artistic affection. Jason Armstrong's artwork respects Mignola's designs wonderfully, and brings to life backgrounds Mignola himself would have shrouded in darkness, as per his own style. It works terribly well and is a delight to read. less

I did not like it as much as Hellboy because I like Mike's drawing better.
