review 1: The Amazing Screw-On Head is a masterpiece. Arguably one of Mike Mignola's finest achievements, this collection, including the short The Amazing Screw-On head story, as well as "other curious objects," is something I can only recommend to everyone. Perhaps twice. Actually, you might well need a copy for every room of your house; god forbid you crave Amazing Screw-On Head and it's not within arm's reach.Presented in Mignola's signature art deco-esque, shadow-saturated style, the titular Amazing Screw-On Head story is a subtly humorous tale, a traditional quasi-fantasy story, that seems to me like just a mix of everything Mignola holds dear. From zombie Abe Lincoln to untold cosmic evil, and presented as a sort of late-1800s superhero story, Screw-On Head is a part-dour, par... moret-uplifting, and all grin-inducing work of pure, inspired genius. It's unlike anything that exists elsewhere, and yet, it is so clearly a love letter to the works that Mignola takes inspiration from. Lovecraft and Poe-esque prose explodes with sincerely bittersweet comedy in a way that seems almost like the way Douglas Adams takes from the likes of Flash Gordon and John Carter of Mars, though Mignola is far more obviously a proponent of the genre; he uses his literary heroes as a guiding light, and by crafting of a tongue-in-cheek plot, it only seems to further highlight how much he respects deeply them. By itself, Screw-On Head is a story worth reading and cherishing. It is the back-up material collected as "Other Curious Objects" that make this volume so far and away definitive. Of particular note is The Magician and the Snake, a story written by Mignola's daughter, Katie. An Eisner-winning tale, it is a deeply touching, bittersweet tale of love, friendship, and death; equal parts genuinely uplifting and dourly depressing, with the final sentiments echoing as some of the most brilliant ever put to a comic's pages. It's an emotional exercise in minimalism and simplicity that is a joy to think about, yet alone read.I love this collection so much. It's everything that made me fall in love with Mignola from reading Hellboy, but it's more - it's so full of heartwarming love, joy and passion for art, literature, and people - not losing any of familiarity of the dark, classic horror tones of Hellboy, but adding in enough humanity and optimism that it shines as a work of pure, unbridled sincerity and fun.
review 2: I first heard of the Amazing Screw-On Head by watching the never-aired SyFy pilot episode online. And I loved it. It was hilarious. A screw-on head with various robot bodies trying to defeat Emperor Zombie while working for Abraham Lincoln....yeah, it sounds nuts, but it was so good! This book was also very good, but it didn't have David Hyde Pierce. However, it did have a lot of fun stories which were not included in the pilot (presumably because they were completely different plot-lines altogether, with very different characters). My favorite was The "Magician and the Snake," co-written by Mignola and his little daughter Katie.I feel like this is certainly a niche book. But, if you're interested in that sort of thing, (ie. Magical Realism, Alternate History) then you might very well like it. And I would also suggest looking up the pilot on YouTube. It's pretty great. less

This was so great. I like the story he did with his daughter.

Your usual Mignola cosmic horror/deft humor hybrid.
