review 1: 3.5, though I feel like I liked it better than The Reincarnationist. It's been 5 years since I read the first book in this series so my memory is fuzzy but I do recall being very blah about it when I thought about the story as a whole. If I could fix the endings to both of these novels, make them more complete, I'd definitely like them more. I don't know what to say about this book really. It was interesting, it was well paced, very much in the model of Dan Brown or Steve Berry. Yet, like it's predecessor, the end gets, incredibly choppy. For providing us with a multitude of angles and possibilities through the first 400 pages, the author throws together and rushed ending that leaves a lot of blatant holes. *Spoilers*We have no idea what happened to all the people at the c... moreoncert hall who were effected by the flute. We have no idea how the gaming box with the letter made it, if it did, to Antonie after Margeux is shot. We have no idea if Meer goes home to the states, stays in Vienna, begins a relationship with Lucian and/or David since they're all intimately connected via past lives. The entire post concert, the focal point for the entire novel, is completely ignored and forgotten which is painfully unfair to the reader. I know this book is part of a trilogy, but this book is so loosely connected (almost non-existant) to the first that it seems too much to expect answers in the third. In all, it's a decent, beachside/rainy day read if you don't have a lot of other options. If you do however, I would recommend those instead of this.
review 2: M.J. Rose's Memorist is full of suspense built up slowly with intriguing foreshadowing, entertaining visually through vivid detail. As a child, Meer Logan is haunted by bizarre memories and elusive music. She leaves for Vienna after receiving a puzzling letter promising to help her unravel the mysteries of her past life. Meer risks her life a number of times along the way to resolve her haunted memories. She has a loving relationship with her father which is felt by the reader almost immediately even though they are usually separated by many miles. The reincarnationist, Malachai Samuels, joins Meer and her father in trying to solve the mystery. Rose's characters are well-rounded as always and come to life quickly. Her research is impeccable, to say the least, and one can only imagine the enormous amount of time involved. The suspense is spine-tingling when the story reaches the highest level of suspense beneath the concert hall in Vienna. This is a great read and one I would highly recommend less
