review 1: I thought it was interesting and original. I liked the history, the castles, the secret chambers. I liked hearing about the scents, the creation and combinations of perfumes, lotions and potions.However, the characters needed more depth and development. I did not like the inclusion of the drippy sex scenes. In my opinion authors or editors add sex scenes because they don't think the book will stand on its own with out them.
review 2: With such a wonderful premise and such a beautiful cover, I really wanted to LOVE this book, but after reading it, I'm actually a bit puzzled by all the glowing reviews. The portions set in 16th century Florence and told from the male viewpoint of René le Florentin, perfumer and poisoner to Catherine de Medici, were far more inter... moreesting and believable than the portions set in present day France, told from the female viewpoint of Jac L’Etoile, mythologist and reluctant perfumist. I simply could not relate to her character in any way (a wealthy woman with a family perfumery fortune, who has her own cable TV show on mythology, and refuses to be in a relationship because she believes the man she loves is destined to die?), and found both her internal and external conflicts to be extremely weak. The villainess of the story is a modern-day carbon copy of Cruella DeVille, right down to the white streaks in her hair, while the male secondary characters were completely lacking in substance - I simply couldn't bring myself to care about them. Maybe I just had my hopes up too high, but given the cover and description, I expected a lush, complex (mostly historical) novel, and this was anything but. less
