review 1: Well-crafted concept and rich narrative can go a long way. The sequel successfully got me waiting for the third installment. This is a rather long fantasy book but that didn't keep it from stirring the emotions of the readers in the journey. Mathias created characters that the readers can connect with. I like Hyden Hawk's intellect and introspective nature. Each of the casts are fighting different foes. I am thrown from one battle ground to the next. Not that I'm complaining, but sometimes it leaves very little time to exhale. I end up catching my breath in every fight scene. This book will appeal to men and women alike. The romance department is sensible for the characters' age. Scenes that matter were given more prominence and you won't be left confuse with detailed meta... morephors that are common to fantasy books. The characters' motivation are believable, even the supporting roles were given ample time to develop. You will enjoy every character's colorful personalities, including the dragons. Vrot is my favorite dragon. He seemed to have a convincing relationship with his master. If you want to know what happened to the enslaved people of Wildermont, and if you want to know if Gerard and Shaella got back together, look no further.
review 2: This book kept me interested. I liked book one but sometimes found my mind wandering whole reading it. That did not happen with this book. It had much more action and moved at a much faster pace. Hyden has become the star of this story. There are plenty of others that made the cut from book one and some others who did not as well. Shaella takes on a bigger role in this book (she is one nasty person). The one thing that stands out to me is the growth of Hyden and his maturity. He is no longer a boy but is a young man full of fierceness and determination. There is plenty of action and even a bit of a love story. The love story part is minor and does not detract from the story it is pretty innocuous. I liked the book very much. less
