The Wardstone Trilogy
review 1: The trilogy had promise (I read all three) - the story line was interesting, the battle scenes were well written and very in-depth BUT the author's ability to develop characters was completely missing. At first I thought that this was a children's series because the characters were so underdeveloped. Characters fell in love after 2 sentences, heroes in the book died abruptly and the other characters just moved on after maybe a sentence of regret. It was weird and kind of painful to read. There were too many inappropriate sex scenes for this to be read by children - which made the story feel even weirder. It was a like a youth trying to write an adult book and not having the maturity to get the emotions, relationships and connections balanced.Again, really interesting story... more line. If it was re-written and re-worked a bit it could become a solid, epic fantasy series.
review 2: I'm a bit torn on the 1-2 star rating here. I was inclined more toward the "It was OK" earlier on it the book, but approaching the 50% mark, I'm definitely leaning toward the "Did not like it" and hence I'm shelving it and moving on to other things. The overall story (characters, plot line and all), while being fairly stereotypical and predictable, it not necessarily bad. However the writing leaves a lot to be desired. I believe it is a first book, and self published, but still... I expect more than this. The descriptions of the world and characters are flat or missing in places, though in others (particularly some of the actions scenes) they are so vivid you feel like you are there. The progression of the story and plot is generally revealed through character's inner thoughts, and often it's a bit too much. It feels juvenile sometimes, particularly around Mikhal and with Gerard & Shaella. Much of where the characters are going it revealed through prophecy and comparison to old stories. It's a bit too in-your-face. A little mystery and guessing is good. It keeps you curious and wanting to know more. Bottom line: The book is long and the haphazard style makes it seem even longer. It's tedious to read. Hence it's being shelved. Given the authors bad reputation with the community, I am a bit doubtful he'll learn anything and hence improve in his later books, so I'm shelving not just the book, but the author as well. On the bright side, should I ever try writing/publishing a book, I have a great example of what not to do. less

The writing leaves a bit to be desired at times, but the storyline is very compelling.
