review 1: Easily the best entry in the Haruhi Suzumiya series so far, Boredom is four short stories, mostly published in other places first, as opposed to a single novel. The characters are well served by this shorter format. Most of the stories are around 40 pages and it suits Tanigawa's writing style. Additionally, this book, while it never turns away from its usual focus on Kyon and Haruhi, subtly increases bookworm Yuki Nagato's involvement, making for a more entertaining read as her personality isn't as insufferable as some of the others.Boredom isn't the place to start this series, but if you've made it this far, you won't be disappointed.
review 2: "Boredom," unlike its two predecessors, is a collection of shorter adventures. This proves to be a strength; where "S
... moreigh" felt padded, each story here fills exactly the space it needs, without needless re-iteration of who’s who. The strongest stories are, no doubt, “Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody” and “Remote Island Syndrome”—the former of which plays with time travel in a way that may not be exactly original, but which is nonetheless fun and interesting, while the latter gives a terrific send-up of Golden Age detective themes and tricks. The other two stories are interesting, if not particularly noteworthy (though “Mysterique Sign” is pretty weak, it does anticipate the themes of detection that crop up in “Remote Island Syndrome”). The greatest strength of this book is the characters; for all the weird stuff going on around them, they remain lifelike and engaging. After the disappointment of "Sigh," "Boredom" is a gratifying return to form. less
