review 1: This book is about a girl who is born with magical talent and sent to a school for witches, but who actually hates magic and would rather be a baker. Personally, I found that a little hard to sympathise with. If she'd been gifted at something dull like math, and been forced to study accounting, I could probably see the appeal of baking, but not much trumps magic for an interesting skill. Otherwise, a sweet little book with a nice message and lots of yummy recipes at the back. Definitely make sure you have some pastries at hand when reading this!
review 2: There will be some spoilers!!!This book is great. If you liked Harry Potter, and want a ten-times less complicated version of it, look no further than The Power of Poppy Pendle! The book starts with Poppy bein
... moreg born in a French bakery, and she begins her story by eating a whole back of sugary almond cakes. Her parents know then and there that she has received the magic gift! It has been passed down through the family, and now it is Poppy's turn...she's an amazing witch...but she hates magic!I found myself really connecting with Poppy, and being angry when she was angry, and upset when she was upset, etc, because I had been going through a similar ordeal--not with magic, obviously!!I also found that I really started hating Mr. and Mrs. Pendle right from the start. Taking away an oven because her love of baking was too distracting? Not allowing their daughter to have friends outside her prestiegous witch school? And when Poppy ran away, I thought that she would live with Marie Clare for the rest of the story...but when she was taken back? I wanted to throw my book at the wall!!When Poppy turned bad, the story got a little...strange for me. I understand why Ms. Natasha Lowe decided to do that because she had been studying the evil witch for school, and how angry she was getting with her parents. I liked how Marie Clare and Charlie knew that something was wrong when Poppy was eating store-bought pastries! I just think Poppy didn't really turn evil...just kind of mentally unstable for a while. Also, couldn't she have known any other spells besides turning things to stone? Sure, it was great for the ending, but after a while, you feel like; "okay...so, how many things has she turned into garden statues?"I did like the epilogue and last couple of chapters. And of course the recipes in the back! I need to get right on those...Anyway, definitely read this book, especially if you like whimsical, fun magic with a bit of a dark twist. less
