Golden Age of the Solar Clipper
review 1: This review first appeared under Kurt's Frontier on Invincible Love of Reading.Ishmael Horatio Wang returns. In the first three books, Ishmael Wang begins as an orphan who takes a birth on a solar clipper because he has no where else to go. He learns the ropes and develops his instincts. Now he learns what it really feels like at the top of the ship’s hierarchy. After one last an exciting run as first mate of the William Tinker, where they salvage a ship where the crew has all perished due to skimping on safety, life begins to get very interesting. He passes the test for his master’s license, and is offered his first command, the SC Agamemnon. The reputation of the ship isn’t good, and it’s moral is worse. Adding to his complications, he has marital problems at home... more. However, he has solved ship problems before, including on the William Tinker. However, on a ship where officers actually outnumber crew, this could be a tall order, and captains aren’t infallible. When they take a cargo on a tight schedule and significant challenges, will he choose a reckless risk to get it delivered on time, or will he swallow the loss and safeguard his crew?Review:Nathan Lowell doesn’t write about heroic soldiers or beings with super powers. His heroes aren’t even trying to save humanity. Mr. Lowell takes us on a tour of the life of ordinary people trying to make an honest living. In many respects, it is refreshing. Nathan Lowell makes the life of an ordinary, hard working spacer interesting.Like the rest of his novels, Captain’s share is well written, and the tale is well told. The dialog can be quirky but believable for a crew that has to be in close quarters for months at a time. Science fiction fans will find Captain’s Share an interesting change of pace. People who aren’t science fiction fans will also find it enjoyable.
review 2: I have been hooked on this series since first coming across the first book Quarter Share. Nathan lowell writes about the relationships, desires, faults and strengths of the people in this series - Golden Age of the Solar Clipper. They come across as interesting, fully realized characters who just happen to work in space hauling freight from one planet to another. There are occasional periods of action and suspense but the primary attraction of this series is the people and the tension of real relationships. You quickly become a part of the story. You want Ishmael to succeed as a spacer. You want the other crew members to succeed as well and there is some real emotion evoked when Ishmael has to leave the ship in order to advance his career and you go through the growing pains with him. It reminds me of my own career in the military spanning more than twenty years, as I experienced the same growing pains and uncertainties of what would happen next. The only negative I can think of is that new books in the series have not been published according to the announced schedule. They are often several months later than advertised. They are worth waiting for. This review is for "Captain's Share" but applies to all of the books in the series: Golden Age of the Solar Clipper. less
