review 1: This is the second book by Nicola Upson to feature Josephine Tey, herself a celebrated mystery writer. Josephine goes to Cornwell to visit her friend Archie Penrose, and while she is visiting there is an apparent suicide, and a murder. There is a mysterious fire, a fey girl, a village wise woman and enough secrets to sink a battle ship. There was just a little too much going on for my taste. I enjoyed the Cornish setting and the depiction of England between the wars, but I won't be looking out for more books by this author.
review 2: Complex story with a lot of red herrings, but you care so much about the characters and it's so well written that you are mesmerized by the entangling tale. Archie Penrose invites Josephine Tey to vacation with him at his family
... morehome in Cornwall, so they can get better acquainted now that the tension between them over Jack's death has been somewhat resolved. Death intrudes early on their vacation and Tey provides sage advice to Penrose who may be too close to those involved in the mystery to be objective. Because of Upson's elegant prose, I was so caught up in their relationship and the plot that I was knocked for a loop by the ending, but it makes perfect sense! less

I found the story to be very intriguing but a bit dark for my taste.
