review 1: Josephine Tey begins a book about 2 women convicted and hanged for "baby farming" 40 years ago. She interviews some of the people involved but has no idea that this renewed interest in the case is causing someone she knows to become uneasy. When a young woman is brutally murdered the real story starts to emerge. And there are many many people that have been affected by the crimes from all those years ago.
review 2: The third book in the Jacqueline Tey series is a strange one. It's a fictionalized account of a writer writing a fictionalized version of a historical event. So it's a bit difficult to pin down. The main flaw of the book is that the plot relies on a huge number of coincidences. Tey is writing a book about a crime that took place 30 years befo
... morere and it just happens that everyone around her is connected to that case. It requires a huge suspension of disbelief to accept this, which I struggled with. But after you get past that, it's a very page-turning mystery that's more about the WHY than the WHO. It deals with some very primal human issues, since at heart is the crime of "baby farming": women who were paid by unwed mothers to get rid of their unwanted children, in this case by murder. The author handles the issues and emotions very well and gives some great portrayals of the various positions: the mother who gave her child up for adoption but regrets it, the mother who chose to keep her child, the woman who killed unwanted babies. So I recommend it, but there were definitely portions that didn't really work for me. There's a subplot about romance and a possible lesbian love interest, but I felt that plot distracted from the mystery and I really just wanted to get back to that. less
