review 1: 3.5I thought this was an alright book. The story mainly revolves around the Faes. Mercy had borrowed a book from a bookstore and the owner had gone missing. It turned out that the faerie queen is looking for the book. It was reputed to hold a lot of power. In reality, it drained the owner of its magic but still, it is a very powerful artifact. Now, Mercy is tasked with keeping the artifact safe. Meanwhile, her personal life is a mess. Adam's pack is rebelling. She is an easy bone of contention since a lot of members are displeased with her. Someone in the pack is messing with her bond to control her thoughts. At the same time, someone is destroying her bond in the pack. They are making her act contrary to her nature, making her resemble Adam's ex wife in behaviour. Meanwhi... morele, she, too, is distancing herself from Adam. She is trying to keep Samuel's limited time of sanity a secret from the werewolves who would be bound to kill him. Samuel is ready to die and it is only his wolf that is holding on. Gabriel's mother banned her family from having any contact with Mercy because trouble surrounds her. And, Gabriel is in trouble since the faerie queen kidnapped him to get her to the lair.I thought this book was just alright. Nothing really stands out. I thought it was going to build up to something when Samuel finally snapped. However, the solution was a bit too convenient. I thought Samuel would have an epic pairing but the background story was so little developed. We really get nothing of the character, not much in my opinion. Her appearance was just like an instant plop in the plot. I thought it would be more developed that that. I don't like deus ex machina type of solutions. I just hoped for a grander pair. Instead, we have a convenient past love who he saved years ago. They parted ways when Samuel thought she would scorn him for being a werewolf. Now they fall back in love very quickly and Samuel has a reason to live again. I'm not really complaining about her character, just the way she was introduced. I can't really think of any favourite moments in the book. I guess this book explored more of the pack's dynamics. There had been numerous attempts to undermine Adam's authority. His position in the hierarchy is challenged. There, he wheedles out the traitor and figures out who the mastermind is. It was Henry and he manipulated Paul and Mary Jo to enact his plans. Mary Jo wanted Adam and thought Mercy wasn't good enough. Paul just wanted power. Henry wanted to get rid of Adam but that was bonus to him moving up the pack's hierarchy.
review 2: Now that I've finished half the series, I felt that it is only right that I should review this book.*ahem*I LOVE MERCY AND ADAM.Since the subgenre urban fantasy has gone mainstream, a lot of it is the same and I am pretty picky about it. As an avid romance reader, UF is a bit different for me, especially when the secondary plot is the romance, with that being said, the trials the characters face throughout the series don't give way to the secondary plot so it's nice when at least one of the books is written with the romance between the hero and heroine as the primary plot. This book is that book, it definitely has the romance going for it. It helps when we see a book devoted to it so it seems more...real (not a good word but I can't think of another one at the moment). While the characters face their villains, there isn't much time to develop the relationship of the main characters. In Silver Borne, Adam and Mercy have to struggle through their bond to come out victorious.Needless to say, so far the series is amazing and Patricia Briggs has skyrocketed to being one of my favorite authors. Now on to River Marked! (Mercy Thompson #6). less
