Mercy Thompson
review 1: This was a bit underwhelming after reading the Alpha and Omega series but it was still good. The story revolves around Mercy Thompson, a coyote mechanic. She grew up with werewolves. She was raised in the Marrok pack since she was young. Her mother had a very brief affair with a walker, who died three days later. Her mother did not know what to do with Mercy when the baby transformed and so she was fostered into a werewolf pack. She was sent away when she was sixteen when she got too involved with Samuel. Bran sent her away after warning her that Samuel only wanted her in order to have living babies. Although that was a large part of his decision, it was phrased in a way as to discount his caring towards her. Presently, she lives next to an alpha werewolf who claimed her a... mores his mate. Samuel also returned to her life. There is trouble in Washington. There are bad werewolves surfacing. A lot of werewolves are discontent with Bran's plans to reveal the existence of werewolves, so much so that they are bankrolling Jerry, who is interested in the come out and is using them to save his father. The problem lies in his method, which is hurting a lot of people. He is experimenting with drugs that are potent enough to affect werewolves. He stormed Adam's home and captured Jessie and killed Mac. Adam, Samuel, and Mercy came to her rescue. What enfolded was a convoluted plan that ended with Dr. Wallace awakening his wolf and actually taking control. When Adam is killed, Dr. Wallace is forced to fight Bran . Fighting alongside Jerry, is Robert, the son of the strong witch. I liked that Mercy isn't TSTL heroine. She is tough but she isn't invincible either. Samuel and Adam are still cookie cutter heroes. They are dominant wolves who are territorial, nothing groundbreaking. The book is somewhat forgettable in my opinion but it is promising only because I've read the Alpha and Omega series and I liked it.
review 2: This is the first supernatural book I have read and I must say I am a convert! IT IS SO GREAT! The story while at times a little predictable is still so well written. I finished this entire book in one day and I will be getting the rest as soon as I can! The main character has the type of bad girl attitude that makes you root for her the whole time. The story seems realistic so I am not continually sitting there and saying "Hah! That would never happen!" But instead saying "Wow, I could actually see that being true!" Which just makes the book far more exciting to read! The descriptive language that Briggs uses is so well done! She really creates the scene so you can see it in your mind, and the descriptors about the characters really make it so you feel what Mercy feels when people talk to her. You can imagine the tension between the characters and the dominanace struggle that is mentioned so often. Like I said at times the story is very predictable which is why I gave it four stars and not five but I do think the stroy progression was fantastic! Briggs never hangs too long on one piece of the story so you get bored but seems to spend the perfect amount of time on each event while leading seamlessly into the next. Her writing made me excited to read the rest of the books and learn more about the characters and the crazy world that Mercy lives in! less
