review 1: When you think to yourself "I love how Mercy notices her emotions and works through them in a constructive manner" you realize you have been reading too much YA Fiction...ooo boy.For that and a hundred other reasons, I LOVED this book! Stunning how, in a sixth book, Briggs still finds more to these characters to talk about. We learn a lot about Mercy's past and there was beautiful attention paid to the history of the Native Americans. Some people may miss the beloved secondary characters to this series, but I had fun meeting new people. I'm still impressed by the character development in amidst things that go bump in the night, and the storyline is furthered in some really wonderful ways. Also, woowww was this bad guy a bad one!! I have never had a problem in dark water, b... moreut I just might now!As with all Mercy Thompson books this is a fast-paced read with enough levity and romance to keep the scary parts bearable. And while I'm still upset that Briggs keeps her novels PG (maybe PG-13) I suppose that can be included in the grown-up nature of the book. Mercy and Adam are wonderful and I appreciate that the book makes their relationship REAL. They still fight, they still misunderstand each other, and they don't work out all their problems in bed! I hope the next book has us headed back to the pack, but it was nice to focus on these two for awhile. Once again, a gem of a book from Briggs.
review 2: Loved all of the Adam/Mercy stuff, loved seeing Mercy explore her heritage. Biggest complaint was that a lot of it felt like someone had copy/pasted huge chunks of info on indigenous history and Washington national parks from wikipedia. I ended up skimming parts of it because I got bored and didn't care about the 3 pages of history lessons about a random museum in a random town. It also felt a bit disjointed, on the whole, like it was a filler novel that might have started as a short story but was expanded (with generous help from wikipedia?) into a novel. I mostly didn't mind because other things made up for it, but I felt like huge chunks of the story could have been streamlined or removed entirely.Nothing super original here, but I enjoyed it as usual! less
