review 1: I appreciated the way that McCormick took a timely topic - the Iraq War - and helped us see the effects of this war on soldiers and Iraqis alike. Her protagonist, Private Matt McDuffy, is complicated and all the more real because of it. He struggles to piece together the events that landed him in a military hospital with a concussion, and he wonders about the friendly Iraqi boy he left behind. I did not give it a higher rating because some of the later plot developments felt unnecessary and the book's themes did not stay with me as I thought they would. That said, I would really like to hear from readers who enjoy war books or other books by McCormick to see how this one compares with others.
review 2: Purple Heart is a book about Private Matt Duffy and his
... more service in Afghanistan. Matt wakes up in a hospital with a terrible headache and no idea of what happened to him. The terrible headache he has is a side effect of a much worse condition, traumatic brain injury. After a few days in a hospital in Baghdad’s Green Zone, a zone where no fighting occurs, Matt’s buddy and fellow squad mate Justin comes in and explains what happened to Matt. They were chasing some adversaries known as insurgents down a road and got separated from their squad. They then ended up in an alley where they receive resistance. During the firefight they converge on a building where they take cover where Justin takes out a sniper in a window, but as they exit the building Matt is blown back by an RPG. Justin then carries Matt to safety and they retreat back to their base to get Matt medical attention. Matt however, has a different memory of the event, where he is in an alley and during the firefight a young boy Matt knew, name Ali, gets hit during the flashback and flies into the air until Matt can only see the soles of his shoes. After going through conversations and recovery tests with Meghan Finnerty, someone who decides if a soldier is ready to back into action, Matt is ready to be put back into the war and most importantly, back with his squad. After Matt returns to the fighting, he realizes his skills have weakened from the time he spent in the Green Zone, but luckily for Matt, he returns during peace time in the war. However, after several days in peace time, Matt ascertains the truth about what really happened in that alleyway. I would recommend Purple Heart to any fan of young adult or war books and limit the age group to thirteen years or older due to the explicit content. Also I would recommend similar books such as Fallen Angels for characteristics and content similar to Purple Heart. I first thought that Matt was quite strange, but grew fond of his personality and characteristics and feel devastated for the injury that he received. Through his painful recovery, he forgot words we use in everyday conversations such as umbrella, raincoat, book, and window. Instead he has to make a complicated explanation for these simple terms to be able to have a conversation with someone. less
