review 1: I found nothing redeeming about anyone or anything in this book. This felt like a cheap stab at being Cormac McCarthy that missed the concepts of emotional depth and the art of brevity as a doorway to visceral experience. By the end of it I still had no idea what I was supposed to be getting out of the story; two horrible brothers have gone on a journey, spreading callous cruelty and violence wherever they go. The final scenes seem to have been crafted after finding that no other vicious violence could be perpetrated, so a horrible, sci-fi sort of scenario occurs that would have a comic book reader feeling the story was taking liberties. I am sure Tarantino is ready to make another empty, violent film out of this, and maybe that's why it was written.
review 2:
... moreA very different read for me as I don't think I've ever read a Western before. & this I would think is a very different Western! I loved the spare writing style which is full of dark, dry humour. The narrator, Eli Sisters, is by turn caring & callous a product of a very sad past & his love & dependence on his brother, Charlie.I had to read the ending again - but on the second reading it made perfect sense. less
