review 1: It's better than the first one, I think. Everything doesn't come around in an elegant spiral, so the sense of mystery is greater. And the threats are greater, as well. In the first book, the villain is mostly toying with them (for plot reasons, but it still makes for dull reading). In this one, the villains are hardcore, ready to kill, and the fate of the world is at stake. The story is about the discovery of a device that can show the future. Only one future, the exact future that was extant when the device was first turned on. No changes will show up in the device's future. Pretty slick way to commit robbery, hmm? Take something from the future, then change the future so that it doesn't happen and you have a guilt-free goodie. Of course, the device isn't used for... more anything that piddly. Instead, it shows a future where the entire world ended. Our heroes have to figure out how and why this happened and also put a stop to it.An exciting, satisfying read. I liked it much-much.
review 2: Ghost Country definitely had its strong points – the science was interesting, seemed plausible, and there certainly wasn’t a lack of suspense or intrigue. That said, this offering was still sub-par in comparison to the other two Patrick Lee novels I’ve read. Most of this is down to a plethora of long, overly drawn-out action sequences. At times it felt tedious; like one long run-on cliff hanger with no end in sight. And while action can and should be a good thing, and is certainly expected in this genre, it left very little room for plot progression, character development, and intelligent reasoning.Had this been my first Lee novel, it most likely would have been my last. less
