review 1: I'm a big fan of fantasy books that explore British mythology and this, the first in a series, delivers in leaps and bounds in mythology and folklore. Paul Crilley's writing style is highly readable and the plot is complex and engrossing enough that the pages whip by at a fast pace. The characters are well developed and the central protagonist is easy to like and root for. Crilley's strength lies in imagery and imagination and the world he builds in Rise of the Darklings is rich and interesting and it's very easy to be swept up by it. Set in a vividly realised Victorian London this book is a must for fans of myth and folklore and those looking for a fast paced, exciting fantasy read that is hard to put down. Aimed at a middle-grade audience this has a twisty enough plot an... mored enough action to satisfy readers of any age. Highly recommended.
review 2: Set in Victorian England, Emily Snow discovers she can see fey creatures. She rescues Corrigan, and gets involved in a war between the courts of the Seelie and Unseelie. I read about half and put it down. I enjoyed Emily and Corrigan's characters, but I wanted to get on to some other reading. The second in the series, The Invisible Order, titled The Fire King, is available in the library. less
