review 1: This book was a disappointment to me. I felt none of the characters were developed, it jumped so many years ahead it was as if the people had no life for a 20 year period. It took me over 3 weeks to get through it and it was one of those things where you keep thinking this story has to take hold any page now. It never gripped me and was boring to the very last page. It is a 2012 Great Group Reads, but it doesn't seem like it has much of a story for a book club. Thumbs down from me.
review 2: This was a good book to read after reading about murders and detective stories. The book started out similar to A Woman of Substance, by Barbara Taylor Bradford. A male character, Joe, starts off poor at the beginning of the century, wanting to work hard and make money
... more...but it slowed down, way down. I guess I was anticipating more generations of O'Briens, more births, deaths, and moving quicker into the present day. Instead, it ended in 1960, and the reader is to guess or conclude life will go on, Joe and his wife will eventually die, and the grandchildren will live their lives. less

Did not love the book. The characters were hard to connect to. Would not recommend it.
