review 1: This is a very pleasant book. The plot was fun, the characters were lively if somewhat unbelievable in true Mayle style, and the end was enjoyable. I read it on trains from Budapest to Florence, and it was a marvelously entertaining companion. It's not a hard hitter and you don't have to be a wine connoisseur to enjoy the intricacies of the story, but it will make you want to sit with a good wine, some stinky cheese, and laugh at the antics Mayle presents. I didn't give it four stars mainly because it didn't make me ask questions, analyze my life, and all that junk that good literature is supposed to do. But I did REALLY enjoy it and look forward to reading more by Mayle.
review 2: A quick, little amuse-bouche of a read. I read A Year in Provence years ago and
... moreenjoyed that book so much more. This novel was less entertaining to me. It's really more about the food and wine and France and good looking women (which gets a little creepy after a while since the main character is an old codger). The crime story is just a weak side plot at best. A little snobby in his portrayal of LA and Napa. And guess what, Peter, bang for the buck, I'll take California wine over French wine any day. Quelle horror! less
