The Stranger 3 (Chapters 25 – 34)

SPOILERS!!!

Something else happens to Ellie. She gets a parcel in the post and when she opens, there are heaps of notes, and before she even counts them, she knows it is £5,000, the money that William withdrew from their account. What does this mean? Who has sent the money and why? I have no idea.

Ellie starts experiencing a change in her heart. She gets more and more attracted to Luca and she even considers telling him. At the same time, her feelings for David peter out as she gets the feeling there is something strange. I think that realising that Henrietta and William had an affair was a real downer. Then she overhears Adam and David in a heated argument. At the dinner table later Adam’s phone pings with an incoming text, and since Adam and David are distracted, she steals a glance and reads the text, someone asking to meet them the next day. I don’t know the reason, but Ellie decides to follow Adam the following day and sees him get into a café. She can’t see who it is he is meeting, but when Adam leaves 45 minutes later, Ellie waits and sees a woman step out of the café, and she is sure this is the woman Adam came to see.

The last straw for Ellie in her relationship with David is when some neighbour notices the earrings that David had given her and recognises them as the same as Henrietta. So Ellie feels cheap, realising that the earrings had belonged to Henrietta. That night she goes to see him and tells him that she has doubts about their relationship and breaks it up with him. David doesn’t take the break-up well, and at some point he grabs her quite roughly, and I feared for her, but nothing happens in the end.

The following day Ellie is in the local shop, and she is told of a rumour that is circulating in the village. People are saying that Luca is the man who raped Anca, and that is why the woman left. Ellie says that Luca has left, trying to protect him, and when she gets home, she tells him what people are saying. Ellie trusts him and suggests he can sleep in her spare room in the house, so that nobody can see he is still there. Luca tells Ellie that the rumour is untrue, and the only time he talked to Anca was when she was cleaning Ellie’s house. Luca asked her about the Mallory farm since he had heard that strange things were happening there, but the woman just got upset and clammed up. Luca has tried to find out more about the Mallory farm, but it is impossible to get inside because of the security system. I wonder what David and Adam Mallory are hiding and whether Luca’s suspicions are somehow linked to the incidents that Ellie has been a victim of.

Then that night Ellie finally talks about what she feels when Luca is around, and even though Luca tells her that it is a bad idea as sooner or later he will have to leave, Ellie just wants him. So finally they get together. It is all very romantic, but I think that Ellie might be hurt in the long run.

In the snippets in Ellie’s past, we see how Ellie finally told her father she was pregnant and how she had been raped by his friend, the doctor. Yet, her father refused to believe her!!! I can’t understand that!!! The man didn’t even doubt; he just didn’t believe his daughter. I wonder if maybe the truth would create too many problems for him, and he preferred to believe that Ellie was lying.
