review 1: This book was on the award list for the 2013 Notables in the Language Arts. I enjoyed the uncomplicated story of bear and his friends going through the motions of getting ready for winter. Bear has a story, but it will have to wait. Though his friends are too busy for the story, he helps them prepare for migration and hibernation. The drawings are detailed and the earth tones warm and pleasing. A two page vertical layout in the middle is unique and shows the depth of mole's hole, and is followed by a two page full bleed illustration of bear watching the first snowflakes fall. I love the visible brushstrokes, texture, and interesting looking trees.
review 2: Bear has a story to tell, so he looks for a friend who will listen. But winter is coming and his friends
... moreare busy with preparations. Bear helps them, but when he's done, they just thank him and head on their way. Finally even Bear has to bunker down for the long, cold winter. When everyone awakens in the spring, they're ready for Bear's story... but Bear can't remember it anymore!I loved the soft water color illustrations in this book. They captured the woodland feel and the softness of nature. There was a lovely sparseness to the winter scenes. The writing had a gentle flow to it. It had a nice narrative that was easy to follow. Structural repetition enhanced the story for young audiences by allowing them an opportunity to predict how each encounter would unfold. less
