review 1: As there is nothing new to see on his street, Sebastian decides to set out to see something new. He builds a balloon from his grandmother's patchwork quilts and is sure to take "all the things he would ever need." Along the way he stops and gains passengers along the way. One stop is intentional, as it time for a snack, while another is not -- the balloon is pierced by a large bird. Remember though, Sebastian has packed everything he needs, so repairs are not a problem.Serendipitous, expressive, particular and charming as Philip Stead's stories usually are (who doesn't like roller coasters?)
review 2: Sebastian surveys his neighborhood from high up on the roof and is a tiny bit bored--but not for long. Using his grandmother's quilts and afghans, he designs a ba
... morelloon and sets off on an adventure. Along the way, he encounters a bear, a very tall bird, and three elderly sisters. All of them work hard to repair the balloon and clean up what Sebastian is sure must be "the most perfect roller coaster they would ever see" (unpaged). They ride it for as long as they can until the wind sends them on their way again. The imaginative text and the illustrations, created with pastels, oil paints, and pressed charcoal, will surely appeal to youngsters dreaming of their own grand adventures from the safety of their bedrooms. I enjoyed being taken along on this journey. less
