review 1: I give the book a low rating, though higher than I normally would have. Let me tell you why. The audacity to try to compile the thousands of pages that have no chronological order whatsoever into something coherent while at the same time culling what is repetitious is astounding. The author's have done that beautifully, here. The problem is I was looking for a book which had gone to the next step, already, and examined those pages critically for themes, ideas, etc., and responded to them. So my problem with the book has nothing to do with the book itself. Instead, I was hoping that Lethem and co. had already digested the raw material (this book) and produced a critical work (which I hope they are doing now). So, I will say that, if you are a fan of PKD, AND you enjoy readi... moreng philosophy (especially raw, journal-y philosophy), then this book will be a gold mine for you. I was just looking for something a little less raw.
review 2: Clearly a brilliant piece of writing, but if you ask me what it is about, I will have a lot of difficulty answering that. Jesus, life, death, spirituality, health, unclear. Secondly, I find that author's over authoritative language attributing fact to fiction matter of factly, drove me crazy. Editor and publishers had to constantly intervene with "notes" explaining author's assumptions and half-truths, but it killed it for me. One book that I couldn't finish. Why three stars you ask? Well, this book is an amazing literary achievement. PKD was probably the most prolific writer of all times, so just because I couldn't get into this book, it doesn't take away from the literary brilliance this book represents. less
