review 1: The latest installment of Bernie Gunther's saga. As always, a story told through the cynical eyes of an intriguing anti-hero who sees beyond the illusion of Third Reich's world conquering plans. Based on real historical people and facts, it feels a little uncomfortably too much of an essay rather than an original take on a noir detective story. One of SS Obergruppenrfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich adjutants is murdered in an ancient castle on the outskirts of Prague, and it's down to Gunther to solve the mystery of a body found in a room locked from the inside. Plot is fairly unoriginal, suspects are obvious, but still the book is quite entertaining and pleasant to read.
review 2: A Bernie Gunther detective story, and my favorite of the series so far. This one finds
... moreBernie in Prague in 1941, at the request of Reinhard Heydrich, a man he both loathes and fears. When one of Heydrich's adjutants is found murdered, Heydrich asks Bernie to investigate. And you don't say no to Heydrich. Lots of good subplots, and a great detective story, all involving German officers who were real. If you love a good detective story, read this book and this series. I love it. less
