review 1: This is a fascinating and mysterious book that will be most appreciated by fans of Kafka, Ishiguro (think "The Unconsoled") and the like. It takes place in an unnamed village, presumably in the Alsatian region of France, near the German border not long after WWII. The subject, Brodeck, has unexpectedly come home from what is hinted at as being a concentration camp, having been "selected" for removal from his village as an outsider under pressure from an occupying force from the "Greater Territory". Through its indirectness and thinly veiled allusions to Nazi Germany, the camps, "outsiders" instead of Jews, and other fascinating literary techniques, Claudel has created a wonderful novel that is universal in its condemnation of discrimination, persecution and genocide rat... moreher than being Holocaust-specific. I'm compelled to read his other books.
review 2: Let's start with the fact that "Brodeck's Report" is the best book I've read in recent years. Why? This is simply a masterpiece from every possible viewpoint: a fascinating plot built in an intelligent manner, how reveals layer by layer the nucleus experience threaded throughout the book, simple but penetrating images, a new story of the Holocaust in a way not yet told, the ability to create a place in time with credibility and relevance. I have many more things to say about this book-- I could talk about it for hours. The bottom line is that: If you have time to read only one book in the coming year, read this one. less
