review 1: How to review this intensely emotional book? To call it a masterpiece might be a cliche, neverthless this book is one of the most profound and yet empathetic books I have read for years. No other book so completely captures the feelings of the 'other', the 'outsider', the sense of isolation that a settled community can inflict on the stranger. Echoes of part of my childhood when the most hurtful thing that other children could say to me was 'Du bist ein Auslander!' as if it was a kind of contagious disease. Read this book and think about what a community actually is
review 2: I need some Prozac. What a depressing book! Having said that, it made a lot of great observations about small town thinking, mob mentality, spiritualism, and the triumph of the human... more spirit in spite of horrendous adversity. I read it quickly, but I can't say I really enjoyed it. The people in this book understand "Kick a Ginger" day. Different = evil. If nothing else, this book really made me appreciate my nice, suburban existence. less
