review 1: Faith Hope and Ivy June is a very good book that takes you through the differences and similarities of two very different people. In this book Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, shows the reader that what seem to be two very different people on the outside are actually very similar in many ways. This book is about two girls named Ivy June Mosley and Catherine Combs who get to take a journey into the life of the other for 2 weeks. In this book both girls are participating in the very first seventh-grade exchange program. In this program each girl gets to go the others house for 2 weeks and get to experience what it would be like if they each were to live the life of the other. Catherine and her family live in a beautiful house with plenty of space in Lexington. Ivy June’s house is ... morevery crowded so she lives with grandparents and great grandma in a small city in the mountains called Thunder Creek. At the beginning of the book both girls seem to be very different but as the book goes on they discover that they are more alike than different. When they are brought together through the terror of not knowing what would happen to their loved ones. This book is a easy read, so i recommend it to anyone who needs quick AR points with a good story.
review 2: I found this book on a Scholastic book order and thought it sounded good. I bought it to give to my middle-school granddaughter and wanted to preview it before giving it to her. I really enjoyed it! Catherine and Ivy June come from two totally different living circumstances even though they don't live all that far apart. When chosen to participate in an exchange program, each girl spends two weeks in the other girl's home. Through the experience, they discover that while they may have differences, they also have many similarities and there is much that they can learn from each other.I thought the exchange idea was intriguing, the book was mostly well written, characters were mostly believable, there were some cute, humorous parts as well as some more serious and emotional parts, and I liked the ending -- all in all, a pretty delightful youth book. A favorite part from Catherine's journal: "Here in Thunder Creek, it's like a big family. Like everyone is related, even the people in towns a hundred miles away. . . . I'd like to think that if there were some big catastrophe back in Lexington, our neighbors would do the same. Strangers even. That they'd strip the blankets off their beds and bring us food off their tables, sit and hold our hands and hug us whether they knew us or not. The same mountains that separate these people from the rest of the world seem to keep them close to each other, and for that, I wonder if Ivy June knows just how lucky she is." (pp. 258-259) less
