review 1: Solid enough of a story, but I couldn’t really get invested in these people. Not exactly sure what caused this. Maybe I just did not care much for them as they were presented (they seemed annoyed by the sneaking around and not that thrilled with their sex life), or maybe it had to do with the writing (not that I am complaining much there; it simply may not have been the most empathy-inducing style), or maybe some of those moments of confusion over what a sentence meant got in the way, too.Added to that, fixing things with Julian at the end just went too smoothly. For the entirety of the book he was being a selfish jerk and suddenly, literally within a few hours, he transforms into understanding and apologetic and whatever. Eh. I don’t feel it.

... mores was inordinately cheesy, but still a lot of fun to read. I mean, there were lines pulled straight from any male on male bodice ripper, and many, many, many eye-roll moments, but it was also pretty much a nice feel-good story that put a smile on my face. But okay yeah, there was not only cheese but cheeeeeeeese in it, so beware. I have probably read tons of variations of this same story in one form or another over the years I’ve read romance novels. It follows a pretty basic (m/m) erotic romance formula and it holds no real surprises (even the “surprise” was something I saw coming before it happened). But somehow the lack of surprises is part of the beauty of it. You know what you’re getting, and that can be sort of nice sometimes. Of course I did sometimes wish that there had been less ‘I liked how he handled his tool’ and ‘just being near him made my cock hard’ and all the rest of those cringe-worthy lines, and yeah, a few of the ‘speaking in all earnest now’ conversations were so clichéd it made me want to quit the story altogether for a bit, but I got over it and kept on reading. In the true spirit of bodice rippers the drama is formulaic and easily resolved, the emotional growth is pretty easy to neglect, and if someone had pulled out a guitar at the end of the book and pulled all the characters into a heartfelt sing-along, it would not have surprised me. Was it hot? Eh… I don’t even know anymore. I’m too desensitized to straight-up smut for it to have much impact on me, and I wasn’t attached enough to the characters to make me intrigued by their sex scenes so… that’s up to someone else to judge, I think. I did like this book though. I’m not even sure if I can put my finger on why I did, but it was an enjoyable read, and I appreciate the hours of entertainment it provided. less
