review 1: WAAAAAAHHH!!! I can't believe how HYPER I am after reading this!!! THIS IS BOOK SO GOOD, YOU MUST READ IT AND TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT IT! It has everything that makes a good story.The plot is basically a big mystery that revolves around the main character, Happenstance (Hap - I love his name) and slowly unravels in every chapter. The mystery between him and giddy 'ol Umber gets to be very serious, and even a little bit creepy. The book gives several of clues to the mysteries around them which get you thinking, but few of them I had guessed correctly. I had plenty of surprises and good laughs.Speaking of laughs, this book is absolutely HIL-ARIOUS! My word, Umber and Oates were killing me in almost every scene. Oates because he's cursed to speak his mind and is naturally... more blunt (nice) and Umber because he drools excitement in the face of danger. They and so many other characters are so funny and awesome, they definitely make the story with their bright personalities. I can hardly wait to read the second book and see what happens next!
review 2: A very intriguing adventure story and mystery. Who is Happenstance and why does he have those special powers? Who is Umber and why does he collect misfits and monsters and magical things? This story introduces the reader to the main characters and poses more questions than it answers. Good thing that it is the first book in a series! Florida Sunshine State book for 2012-2013. less
