review 1: My first reaction to this book, well before actually seeing it, was that Genesis was all too appropriate a book for Robert Crumb to illustrate, with its copious scenes of grisly violence, and of sex which was often no less depraved and repugnant than the violence. In this respect, Genesis resembles some of Crumb's earliest (and most notorious) work. When I actually read the book, my expectations were not disappointed. Crumb does an excellent job of depicting and explaining the many stories we all know (the Garden of Eden, Noah's Flood) and the ones we are less likely to be familiar with (the deception and massacre of the men of the town of Shechem, which gives new meaning to the term "surgical strike").I admire Crumb's decision to illustrate the entire book, which makes t... morehis something more than the usual "stories from the Bible"), and helps us to put the various stories in perspective.I come away from this book knowing more about Genesis than I did before, and with my reservations about it as the basis of a child's moral education (or of a civilization's) sadly intact. These are not, by and large, people you would want your children to grow up emulating.
review 2: Whatever the man's intentions, and no matter what you may think of his other work, this version of Genesis is dead on target, IMHO. We see the awesomeness of God right up next to the warts of humanity. Everything earthy is right out there. This is not for children younger than 17, in my opinion, and the King James text will be difficult for some, plus graphic images of violence and sex. Not for the folks who prefer scripture declaimed and devoid of sensuality. This ain't for Sunday, kids.I was also fortunate enough to catch the touring show at my local museum of art, and viewing the actual hand drawn pages side by side with the research materials and preliminary sketches was a delight. Enjoy! less
