review 1: This is a collection of fantasy stories set in a world based on the Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons setting. I got this audiobook for free from Audible in celebration of 40 years of D&D.Each story was read by a relatively famous actor or internet celebrity. Most notably is Ice-T. His mispronunciation of "sword" was at first distracting, but became endearing. With him are the likes of Wil Wheaton, Felicia Day, Sean Astin, Al Yankovic, David Duchovney and others. While they were ultimately good stories, I discovered that I'm really not a fantasy book guy. If it wasn't that it was free, and read by interesting people, I don't think I would actively pursued this book.Your mileage may vary. If you are into D&D, or Salvatore's work in general, I'm sure you would enjoy these s... moretories.S: 8/18/14 F: 8/28/14 (11 Days)
review 2: Let me start this with the statement that I have never read any of R.A. Salvatore's other works but I thought this would be an interesting place to jump in and see if other books were worth picking up. I got the audio version because I love many of the actors that are lending their voices to these stories. The first tale, of goblins and dwarves, was fun and sometimes humorous. But it lacked the background in the story to really understand the world that this took place in. Not a huge deal, but if you are like me, and jumping in here in the middle, it can be a little hard to understand character's thoughts and why they are doing what they are doing. The second tale, which actually is from Drizzt's perspective, is predictable enough but I like the fact that there is no easy solution to the problems of the world and the the hero can not just kill everything that bothers him because it will have consequences for the larger world. Of course, the conclusion he has at the end is to say screw those consequences. The third tale is a wonderful exploration on what it takes to be the best rogue. The fourth story is an interesting view on morality again. When is it ok to kill an animal? There are a tin of these short stories and now that I have finished them, I don't really have the time to review each one but maybe I will come back to this later. But overall, a fun set of stories that made me really want to play a D&D campaign again. less
