review 1: An enjoyable but not challenging series, one of the first by Rachel Aaron who has definitely improved as an author subsequently. This is almost young adult territory, and has lots of cliches which I found annoying (amazing but taciturn swordsman with a heart of gold; cheeky, powerful thief with a heart of gold, girl afflicted with demon powers but with a heart of gold etc etc)old curmudgeon that I am. I also found a few niggles with the portrayal of Miranda the Spiritualist, for example her gender-loaded description as 'hysterical' rather than the more accurate 'grieving' at one point. Having said that I did read and enjoy all 5 books in the series.
review 2: This is one (well, really three) charming book! Full of wizards, some good, some bad and some just
... morebureaucrats; demons and their ilk; sword fighters with varying degrees of skill and virtue; minor deities; and one very clever and powerful wizard-thief. (That would be the title character). Plenty of humor, lots of excitement, and enough unexpected turns of events to keep any fantasy fan reading far too long into the night. The one disappointment/unexpected pleasure is that this book contains only the first three of an at least 5-book saga. So now I need to look for the rest of these books, because, really, I can't stop here! less
