The Legend of Eli Monpress
review 1: Lots of fun! I love books where the personalities of the main characters get revealed slowly, through the progression of the plot and through their actions, rather than through long chunks of tedious exposition or internal monologue. Even better when the characters still retain secrets and mysteries that provide a great incentive for diving right into the sequel. The Spirit Thief is as fabulous a start to an adventure-filled fantasy series as ever I've encountered, with canny world-building and pacing to match the skill of the characterization.
review 2: While it's quite good for a début novel, it didn't turn out to be what I expected. The characters reminded me of Dragon Ball Z -- every time you think they're powerful or weak, they suddenly power-up (a mysteri
... moreous "benefactor" spirit; a secret, unknown spirit; a magical sword that gives a pep talk) at the last minute to become a stronger version of themselves, and nothing is ever mentioned or explained at why this was the case. My suspicions were confirmed when, in the interview at the back of the book, the author admits the inspiration for this book came from a friend who played D&D. Unless it comes with character growth, this "levelling up" idea works well in games and even in children's shows or anime, but it doesn't transition well in books. It was very cliché, cheesy and was on the border of the definition of "deus ex machina".I also felt like this book was perhaps the second book in the series because all of the characters have a history and have clearly known each other for quite some time, but we readers aren't told anything. For instance, if you were to ask me why Nico, Josef and Eli are travelling together, I couldn't tell you. I don't even know how they met. I don't know how Miranda or Gin met, either. I know very little about these characters, their past and their motivations. And if I'm going to read a book then I would at least like to know about the characters I'm reading. So that's why I've given it two stars. It wasn't bad but, by the end, I did think I had wasted my time.P.SThe man on the cover looks really creepy. He reminds me of Jafar from Aladdin. less

Loved this book! I couldn't stop reading it, though I had other things I was doing while reading it!

The beginning was sort of hokey, but it got much better. Hooked on the series.

Some novel worldbuilding. Reminds me strongly of Diana Wynne Jones.

Definitely plan on reading the rest of the series (eventually)
