review 1: This is more of a 3.5 star book. I thought the first story in this collection was slow, and quite frankly almost gave up. However, the final two novels were really good and we got to discover things about Eli and Nico that were not covered in the first novel, most notably their past. The novels are mostly straight forward adventures as Eli tries to get a $1,000,000 bounty on his head while avoiding the Spiritualist (a wizard who can communicate with and control the spirits that reside in all inanimate objects) sent to capture him and usualyy dealing with another villain or two along the way. If you're looking for really deep dialog or for the characters to have a love interest, this is probably not for you. These are light-hearted, fun adventures.

... more, this is the latest indulgence of my predilection for thievery stories. Except there's very little thievery. That being said, this is actually a great book...for young readers. While Aaron's style is definitely simple and rather juvenile, and you hardly get to see any of Eli's cleverness at all, this series contains enough action to be interesting and has a great message. Over and over again, Aaron emphasizes respect and willpower in the form of the system of magic in this world and the actions of the characters. However, older readers will find these books overly repetitive and lacking the finesse of a great series like Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards. Basically, these first three books are all exposition and the meat of the story really only gets started towards the end of the third book. The plot is rather thin and Aaron seeks to weave together backstories, which is pretty predicatable. Eli is really the only one who can do witty banter and the character of Miranda Lyonette is insufferable. It's entertaining enough, but I really wouldn't recommend it unless you read YA fiction on a regular basis and can overlook these elements when they've been done so much better by Scott Lynch. less
