The Legend of Eli Monpress
review 1: Honestly, this book suffered from the same problems I had with the first one. It's not that Eli was unlikable, it's just that I have a hard time enjoying that cocky, world-be-damned thief archetype and although there were moments where we got to see the soft underbelly that Eli had, they were so few and far between that I couldn't like him the same way I did Miranda or Nico. At least Miranda and Nico both seemed like they had something to lose in this, whereas Eli was endangering his friends and spirits for... fun? The challenge? To be honest, the only portion of the book that truly got me was the moment where Joseph realized that his immense hubris was endangering Nico and that he was a complete dick face for not using his all powerful sword sooner. This book is complete... morely readable and the plot moves along at a brisk pace. The villain is really intriguing and fun. My only issue is that I'm not invested in anyone other than Miranda since she is the only one with anything to lose in this whole book.
review 2: I enjoyed this book as much as the first in the series. A fun read that I could pick up in odd moments and cover bit sized bits of ground whenever I did.The characters are a bit more well developed this time around, especially Miranda (who spends very little time feeling sorry for herself after getting kicked out of the Spirit Court, but then she gets a new job offer fairly quickly). Quite like her and (don't spoil it for me please as I deliberately don't read reviews for later books in series I'm reading) hope she continues to stand well on her own--I'll be tremendously disappointed if she and Eli fall in love. The basic plot is that there's another evil wizard to deal with, in nearly as great a position of power, but this time he's afflicted with some kind of egomaniacal OCD and has to organize the spirits of the entire duchy to suit his sense of order. He's done pretty well at it the last couple of decades, too. Miranda, Eli and crew to the rescue in a pincer movement that almost doesn't work, but they are the heroes after all and pull things together at the next to last moment. The only issue I have with the book is that things more or less tie up neatly for nearly everyone. Everyone more or less gets what they want with one exception (but I'm sure Nico's time will come).Knowing there's a sequel (actually, I think the series is up to 5 books now, plus a prequel novella), the signs of building power in all of the main characters, and the presence of some powerful background friends, lead me in the direction of a massive, world shaking conflict on the way.Should be interesting to see what comes next, but I haven't got the third book in my possession yet. Maybe for Christmas or in the sprawling sales afterwards. less

Perhaps a slight drop in quality, but nevertheless a very addictive read.
