review 1: Where do I start? I picked up this book not sure how I would like it. That was 4 years ago. The first 100 or so pages did not grab me. I did not find the husband and wife likable. So then I myself was diagnosed with cancer! What a coincidence! And of course I would have to be a raging sadist to continue it........that was 4 years ago this week. And I am not dying, recovered from my cancer. So. I pick up the book now. How scary can it be? But I just can not get into this book. It is brutal.. Characters not people I can empathize with..I guess I should thank god right?
review 2: This book packs a punch for anyone who has gone through the last days of a loved one. It took me a few weeks to finish it because it was a reminder of two similar experience
... mores in my own life. The author nailed the emotions which the caretaker/survivor experiences: fear, panic, guilt, confusion, frustration, anger, depression, despair, and grief--sometimes all at once. The book's chapters alternate between the couple's first dates and early marriage with chapters dealing with his dying wife's last days. This alternating between past and present was a great technique for letting the reader get to know Margaret as a person and not just as a dying woman. Another positive quality of the book is that the author did not sugar coat the relationship, which like most, had rough patches as well as good times. The two people are shown with their flaws as well as their better qualities, and the author honestly reflects the sacrifices that each made for the sake of the marriage. Maybe because of the unflinching look the author takes at himself, his wife, and their marriage, the reader is all the more involved in the relationship and feels the loss of Margaret deeply. For anyone who has endured prolonged demise of a loved one, this book validates the emotions that the caretaker also feels, and shows that in this type of situation, most of us have the same burdens to bear. less
