review 1: "Now that his dandelion is bare Pomelo has decided that it's time to set out on his big adventure." So he packs up everything he thinks he will need including his much needed courage and tosses a stone with a red ribbon tied to it to determine the direction he will go in. And off goes Pomelo into to new vast world. Through out his journey pomelo experiences many new things some good, bad and frightening. He also comes across a few very interesting characters some only pretend to help Pomelo and end up taking advantage of him. Regardless Pomelo marches forth and just as he is about to give up he meets Papamelo who encourages him and teaches him several skills that he needs to succeed in the big scary world. Papamelo then sends him off to continue his adventure. After a horr... moreible storm Pomelo ends up in a strange new place with an even more peculiar friend. "Pomelo's Big Adventure" is a Hero's Journey Narrative style picture book. However Pomelo is not your typical hero since he is rather small and naive, the illustrator depicts this idea very well by having the drawings cover the entire page and making him significantly smaller than his surroundings and most of the characters he comes across and also by making his trunk much too long for his body this signifies that he is young and still has growing to do. I think the purpose of this is because children relate too this idea since they feel small compared to adults and can also relate to Pomelo's curiosity of the world. Another thing I enjoyed about the illustrations was that they reinforced the story very well for example, when Pomelo is going through hardships the illustrations become dark and gloomy and it begins to rain and when he is happy again the colorful drawings return. The story flowed well and was easy to read I like that through the text you get Pomelo's perspective while the illustrations tell the entire story. The author did a great job capturing a child's sense of wonder through Pomelo's inner thoughts I believe this makes the book very relatable. I think this is a great picture book that children will really enjoy however it may be a bit hard for them to follow since the setting tends to change quite abruptly through out the story.
review 2: Think The Little Prince meets Oh, The Places You'll Go! Pomelo sets out on a journey that seems to teach life lessons too. Through ups and downs, Pomelo gains life experience and in the end, a friend to share the journey with. The opening sentence is among my favorites of all time: "Now that his dandelion is bare, Pomelo has decided that it's time to set out on his big adventure."This is a buy-worthy book, especially because it's one that grows with you. It reads differently as you gain life experiences and the illustrations add humor that'll keep readers returning to the wisdom of the journey.PreK-2. less
