Wild Card was so much more than I expected, then again I can honestly say I didn’t know what to expect in this new North Ridge Series. Author Karina Halle took me on a tale of coming home and second chance romance that was full of grit, questions, love and healing.
Rachel Waters is a different type of character for me. She’s somewhat strong but emotionally she’s still suffering from the effects of her youth. She is vulnerable in a way that is real and yet at times she’s so wishy-washy that it drives me crazy. Then on the other hand you get peaks of the Rachel that is playful and nostalgic and so full of love for Shane, which really balances out this emotionally damaged character who is fighting to get her life back.
Shane Nelson is the epitome of selfless. He made the ultimate sacrifice to help the woman he loves all the while breaking his own heart into pieces. Shane is a very responsible character who loves his life, minus the missing piece which is Rachel. However Shane isn’t a perfect character, he more than anyone understands Rachel’s past and the hurt he caused her, but he expects her to jump in his arms like nothing ever happened and give love a second chance. He has to learn that second chance love takes time and patience.
Wild Card is a rugged tale of broken family, broken love, and a very broken girl. It wasn’t a fast paced book and there was never this huge aha moment because you were able to pick up what was going on fairly quickly. That being said this book definitely showed the hotter sides of these characters and their connection. If you want a story that is gripping and sexy at the same time then I would definitely, definitely pick this book up.
