review 1: Listened to audio book - narrator performing the various accents of the characters added a level of enjoyment to this well-written account of George "Machine-gun" Kelly and his moll Kit's exploits in 1930's America. They come to life as a couple who deserve each other while they are betrayed by less moral criminals and pursed by the archetypal, old school Texas-turned-federal lawman, Gus T. Jones. Peppered with high-speed car chases and shootouts with tommy-guns. the novel snakes its way across dusty depression-hit states in the south and mid-west from San Antonio to the Chicago world's fair. It makes for a thrilling read and poignant analysis of what drives them to their demise: greed, lust, love and the quest for a excitement. These two like a good time that I felt part ... moreof during the story.
review 2: This book has many characters at the beginning and plot lines that come together, but it makes a confusing beginning. However, if you are aware of the period (1930s) and some of the gangster lore of the period this is an involving read. A period near the end is set in Chicago which was fun to follow on the streets as they drive around. The people do move around alot and keeping track where evedyone is, and their cars, is more than challenging. less
