In A Shade of Vampire, we meet teenage Sofia Claremont, normal girl with a crush on her best friend, Ben. She lives with his family, and they take a trip to Cancun during summer. When she wants to confess her feelings to Ben, he sees his ex-girlfriend and decides to rekindle their relationship. Upset, Sofia decides to walk the beach where she meets, and is kidnapped, by a vampire and taken to The Shade, an unknown, unmapped island in endless night, to be in a harem for Derek Novak when he wakes up from his 400-year slumber. Instead, Derek takes a liking to her, never wanting to harm her.
I believe the last vampire story I read was Twilight. Right now, I’m a bigger fan of Twilight than A Shade of Vampire – but the series is only beginning and I have hopes that I’ll start to like it.
I feel like it has potential to grow.
What I liked:
- The characters were nice and easy to understand. I didn’t outright hate a character I wasn’t supposed to hate.
- The world was very developed and easy to picture. The Shade, although it did seem a bit much with all the titles, was described very vividly.
What I didn’t like:
- The dialogue. It wasn’t realistic, it seemed pretentious.
- The situations. I hate to say they were unbelievable because I never care about believability, they were just strange and too planned. The story seemed too structured and rigid.
It’s a short start to the series and easy to get through.
I will continue with the story because I really want to see how it goes.
