review 1: This is the second of S. J. Bolton's books I have read. This one stars a wildlife vet with major personal issues who lives in a small town in Dorset, and who gets the chance to act as resident herpetologist when a plague of snakes starts taking down the villagers. There is a perverse tale from the past that eventually explains everything, and the twists and turns taken to get to that explanation are as mesmerizing as the snakes.
review 2: Yet again dithering on the star factor. This was a well written mystery. Loaded with atmosphere, lot of things going on as Clara digs into the past to figure out what's happening in the present, enjoyed seeing her reclusive character evolve and, that most important feature of a good mystery, kept me guessing without cheating
... more but for some reason it was not my favorite of the Bolton novels I've read thus far. I have no explanation. Maybe it's because of the snakes. Personally, I don't have any real gripes with snakes, as long as they stay outside where they are supposed to be, but they are my daughter's Irrational Fear and I kept thinking, "Oh this is definitely not a book for my girl!" Frequently enough for it to be a little distracting. For me. I'm gonna go with that, personal distraction. Otherwise, well done. less
