Hello readers!
Today is the day my friend and I drive to Charleston for YALLfest! I can’t wait to meet authors, see panels, and join in all the book-loving fun! If anyone is going or has gone before and has any tips, please let me know!
This week’s Book Rec Thursday is a bit of a sentimental recommendation. I got dragged into a group called the Rebel Belles a few years ago, which was full of girls who are fans of this series. We still talk daily and I’ve been revisiting our prime Rebel Belles days recently, so it’s about time we talk about Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins!
Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins
In modern day Alabama, Harper Price rules her high school. She’s class president, on track to be valedictorian, and a member of countless clubs and after school activities. But when a strange run-in with a school janitor in the school bathroom during homecoming leaves her with the ancient superpowers of a Paladin, a warrior who protects the Oracle, everything changes. Will Harper be able to balance the impending stress of senior year and save the world from evil?
These books are a quick read, but they pack a punch (both figuratively and literally). Every character brings something beautiful and unique to the story and you want to root for all of them. As someone who lives in the deep South, I can testify firsthand that these books are entirely accurate on the traditions and lifestyles of small towns in the South, and that makes this reading experience all the more unique and enjoyable.
Rachel Hawkins is an expert at packing enough action and drama and romance into a quick read to give you emotional whiplash for a few days. Every time I read these, I’m surprised by just how much happens over the course of a few hundred pages and how much changes over the three books. By the end, they go on one of those YA road trip quests and who isn’t here for one of those?
The next time you’re looking for a quick, fun read that will stick with you, this is a sure bet. And when you read Miss Mayhem, check out the acknowledgements for a shoutout to the Rebel Belles! (We love you Rachel. Rebel Belles forever.)
Happy YALLfest and happy reading!
