Day 17: Heatbeats

Today I am thankful for heartbeats.

Breathe in a chest rising and falling giving oxygen to a heart that isn’t mines. As I lay next to Marq sometimes I try to hear the thumps of his heart. I imagine the muscle pushing blood through miles of arteries and veins, swishing as every beat moves oxygen along – his cells swimming in rhythm to a sacred dance of sorts.

At these moments I’m taken back by how fragile life is and how gracious every heartbeat can be. For one stopped heartbeat in the sea of people I love can be life changing. My husband,  our son, my sisters and parents, friends, aunts and uncles – all sustained by a continued muscle drumming within them, keeping them close to me. In this I am thankful today for the song of life within their chest walls – every pump, every breathe. Thank you Lord. What a gift.
