Day 5b: Wood in architecture

Destination: Izola & Dragonja, Slovenia

VISITING UNIVERSITY OF PRIMORSKA

This course is coordinated by Oregon State University in the US with University of Primorska in Slovenia. While we were in Slovenia, we visited the new building of Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (FAMNIT) in Izola.

We were welcomed by The Rector. Then continued by a presentation from Andreja Kutnar as a professor in FAMNIT and Director of Innorenew CoE (Renewable materials and healthy environments research and innovation centre of excellence).

We also had a tour to see some of research labs in the new building.

ARCHITECTURE LECTURE

In the night, we had an architecture lecture about renovation of the accommodation that we stayed, Casa Vuki.

The accommodation was found as a “ruin with broken walls and plants invading all over the place. The hidden beauty of this 150-years old ruin was slowly brought to a new life during a 5-year renovation.” In those years, the renovation team put energy into “endless stone walls details, wooden construction elements, refurbishment with water and the new access road.” They “put particular attention to natural building materials, such as stone, wood and terracotta which require patient work and skills.” Source: https://casavuki.si/story/.
