While it’s been 363 days since our last post on here (insert super sheepish face), we promise it was worth the wait. Today we’re back to talk about Bacchus, and in preparation for writing this post, we did some Googling to find quotes about the Roman God of agriculture and wine. Dude. That was fun.
- “Music is the wine which inspires one to new generative processes, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for mankind and makes them spiritually drunken.” -Ludwig van Beethoven
- “Far from me be the gift of Bacchus–pernicious, inflaming wine, that weakens both body and mind.” -Homer
- “Bacchus: A convenient deity invented by the ancients as an excuse for getting drunk.” -Ambrose Bierce
And finally, the quote that inspired the title of this post:
- “Bacchus has drowned more men than Neptune.” -Giuseppe Garibaldi
So, yeah. Bacchus was a pretty cool cat. And our super serious Google research only further solidified the name choice for our new bag-with-a-wine-secret. So without further ado, here is our Bacchus.
Bacchus is a large totebag that is great for special events and ocassions, with a finished size of 12″ x 19″ x 7″.
But Bacchus also has a fun secret. There’s an optional lining with a zipper pocket that hides cold bag storage for a bladder of wine. So here’s how the interior of the bag looks to the unsuspecting person.
But if you remove the false bottom, and open the zipper, there’s a cold bag hidden inside!
The flap hides the spout for the wine bladder… how cool is that?! And these fabrics are from the absolutely gorgeous Bellisima line from our wonderful friends at Quilting Treasures. It doesn’t come across well in the pictures, but the gold color actually sparkles.
How great is this bag for spring and summer festival season? (We’re clearly dreaming of warmer weather here in snowy Virginia.) But seriously, we’ve all stood in mile-long lines in the sun to get alcohol that gets hot almost immediately. (Again, maybe just a Virginia problem?) If you have a Bacchus though, you can bring your own chilled wine and have it stay cool for hours with the thermal batting in the cold bag.
Now, here is where we should pause for a minute for an important PSA. We are NOT in any way endorsing sneaking wine into an event or location that doesn’t allow outside alcohol. No! Bad drinker! We are talking about casual picnics and backyard barbecues, or concerts and festivals that allow you to consume your own alcohol. So you know, be cool and follow the rules. (Our lawyers told us to say that. Just kidding. We don’t have lawyers. But we probably should.)
So back to the bag. You want to see it in action? You know you do.
Okay, okay… so that wasn’t the greatest cinematic masterpiece of all time, but you get the point. It’s just that easy to pour wine from your bag!!
And before you go running around saying that ALL we do is drink wine over here at WOW HQ (although that’s a pretty fair characterization), all of these cool features are totally optional. The pattern also describes how to sew up a Bacchus without the lining, false bottom, flap, or cold bag and to create a beautiful, eye-catching totebag without all the secrecy.
The Bacchus PDF pattern has 17 pages and over 95 (!!) color photos to help you every step of the way. You can buy it via instant download in our Etsy or Craftsy shops for only $9. Happy sewing, and happy drinking, friends!
