Last week I was looking for somewhere to meet a friend for lunch. My son is reliable enough most days to have something from a children’s menu, so I’ve given up taking food with us. We’ve been to a cafe bar in the city centre frequently since he was born and last time he tried the children’s option of some grilled chicken, tabouleh and salad. Not a hint of interest in the salad, but loved the chicken and tried the tabouleh, much to my surprise. So, it being a few months on, I thought we’d head there again and I had a quick look at the menu online the night before.
Our son is no gourmet, but he’s willing to try things, so I was really disappointed to see that the children’s options had changed to fish fingers and chips, macaroni cheese and spaghetti bolognaise. All good options for little diners, but all very… safe? So this got me thinking: do parents only want something that they know their children will eat, or are there other people out there who think that it would be good to see something different as well?
