As cold weather settles in DC, owning of a solid pair of boots becomes a necessity. Whether you are a complete boot addict like me, or just have one dependable, go-to pair, here is a definitive list of the must-have boot styles to match every outfit this fall and winter.

The Ankle Boot

This boot is a must-have to dress up a “leggings and sweater” kind of day. Plus if you manage to get the right color, they go with practically everything. This pair is from Rag & Bone, but I would recommend searching around to find a pair comfortable enough to wear 24/7. While I personally love the low-heel look, a taller pair is a great way to to get a height boost without worrying about teetering in traditional high heels.

The Ankle Rain Boot

Who says rain boots have to be clunky? There are plenty of options now that complement a pair of jeans perfectly, and are cute enough to wear in rain or shine. Although Hunter is associated with their knee-high rain boots, these are a little more everyday and don’t make you choose between fashion and durability.

The Riding Boot

A timeless classic, these knee-highs go with almost any pant and sweater combo, making them a staple in a cold-weather fashion. There are so many different riding boots on the market that it’s easy to find a pair you like, but also hard to choose just one pair that you can’t live without.

The Moto Boot

While very similar to the ankle boot, the moto boot gives you a little more winter street style. Plus they’re more casual, slightly more weatherproof, and sure to last a few seasons. This pair is from Frye, though many other stores carry similar versions. Their durability will depend on the type of material, but regardless they match so many different outfits that you can’t go wrong getting a pair.

It is almost impossible to cover all the boot styles out there in one post, but these are a few basic essentials for the upcoming seasons. Many stores have been holding sales to anticipate the boot-buying rush, and I would definitely recommend taking advantage. However, these options are more concerned with looking stylish than keeping your toes warm, so don’t forget to invest in a pair that can ward off frostbite!
