Game of Thrones S3, E5 “Kissed by Fire” Review

Kissed By Fire starts with an awesome fight between the Hound and Beric Dondarrion. The flaming sword looks really cool and is a great way to exploit the Hound’s weakness. Beric returning from the dead is really intriguing, the fact that it has happened six times is really bizarre. Arya being sad over Gendry staying behind is a rather sad moment as the two of them had developed quite a nice bond.

Jon lies to the wildlings about Castle Black having one thousand night’s watch men manning it. This helps prove that Jon is loyal to the night’s watch despite him breaking his vows in case any viewers were uncertain. He and Ygritte have sex in a cave which is a really nice moment, they have a great relationship.

Roose Bolton toying with Jaime about Cersei’s safety is a funny moment. The scene in the bath with Jaime and Brienne is just fantastic. We finally hear Jaime’s side to the ‘kingslayer’ story which really helps show his humanity and yet again continues to make him an empathetic character.

Rickard Karstark killing the Lannister children makes sense and has been well built up to. Robb, being Ned’s son, insists on having justice so he executes Rickard. This is a great scene as we see Robb doing what he considers just even though he knows it will lose him half of his men. Robb really is in a losing position but he devises a plan to attack Casterly Rock, only he needs Walder Frey’s help, this is a very great direction to take his story as Walder has reason to be pissed off at Robb.

We meet Stannis’ wife, Selyse, who is absolutely mental. She is crazily obsessed with the lord of light and keeps her stillborn sons in jars. Stannis not loving her makes sense but his relationship with his daughter, Shireen, is much more interesting. It seems like Stannis doesn’t really love her either but he feels like he should, he just doesn’t know how to.

The ending scene is brilliant. We really see how dysfunctional the Lannister family is and how much hatred is felt between them. As expected, the Lannisters are not happy with the Tyrell’s plans so they are planning to marry Sansa to Tyrion and Loras to Cersei. The conflict between the Lannisters and Tyrells I find so compelling since both families hate each other yet need each other.

Overall, this is a brilliant episode. There are several fantastic scenes here and great scenes throughout. The Robb and King’s Landing storylines are heading in really compelling directions in particular.

9/10
