If you are somewhere in the beginning of this series and are wondering whether you want to read the next instalment or not, I assure you, you should definitely continue. Things are just about to get interesting …
I think this book is like a transition to all the serious war stuff that will happen in the next books. This book was the information sector, with important details being filled in. The characters in this series keep getting more complex, and I like them more and more! You get to know them much better. Things are just so unexpected in Gathering Darkness and this series in general. The most unexpected relationships form, and not to mention, characters unexpectedly die! Why whyyyyy??? Morgan Rhodes how could you do this to us??? Yes, the plot twist was real and well played out in my opinion (at least for me, as I am not so good at predicting), and yes, there were deaths. Sorrowful ones.
I generally like Morgan Rhodes’ writing because it’s smooth and it flows really well, which is amazing to have once in a while. Like Morgan Rhodes herself said to me once (*INSERT FANGIRL CRIES*) during a book signing, it is like a “breeze”. And it is!!! You feel a lot of emotions in this book, and with Rhodes’ writing, it feels like they flow through you like a soft coursing river.
When Rhodes wants you to hate a character, she makes you hate ’em! King Gaius boiled my blood till it started to vaporize!!! His dirty politics and manipulative speech and propaganda and fraudulent behaviours and total corruption—all elements of a dystopia by the way—were enough to get me really scared and interested and sad for the world that we have power-hungry couldn’t-even-be-called-human-beings people like this!
There is always something interesting going on in this book and no repetitions or long descriptions or any other potentially tedious stuff. You will find A LOT of conflict, politics, scheming, and searching for the Kindred. You will experience heartbreak. Like whyyyyy Morgan Rhodes why you have to do this to me??
I am really excited to know what is going to happen in the next instalment! I look forward to completing the Falling Kingdoms series.
There’s nothing like a good book, a fuzzy blanket and peppermint hot chocolate!
